Why Consider an Internship in Data Science in the United States?

Data is everywhere, offering endless job opportunities for those skilled in working with it. But why choose an internship in the United States instead of staying in your home country? Consider these important points when selecting your internship location:

  1. The United States leads in the number of data scientists.
  2. International experience is highly valued in the data science field.
  3. Data science internships provide hands-on industry experience.
  4. Interns gain access to valuable feedback and learning opportunities.

The United States leads in the number of data scientists

The United States is home to the largest concentration of data scientists, with 55% of them on LinkedIn based in the U.S. In today’s connection-driven world, it’s the ideal place to start your career and network with professionals at the top of your field.

International experience is highly valued in the data science field

Internationalization means adapting products and programs to meet global market needs. Effective communication and collaboration across cultures are important in every industry. A European Parliament study on higher education highlighted how study abroad and overseas work placements boost employability and address global challenges.

Data science professionals are crucial to building a globally inclusive workforce. While interns gain programming and data analysis skills in most data science internships, an international experience offers additional growth. Here are some key advantages of participating in an international data science internship:

  • Data Privacy Knowledge: Understanding cultural differences in data privacy that your home or host country may not be aware of.
  • Cross-Cultural Competence: Developing the ability to collaborate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Global Trends Insight: Gaining a broader understanding of global innovations and trends in data science.
  • Global Context Knowledge: Increasing awareness of the economic, social, political, and cultural factors that impact data.
  • Tool Exposure: Learning how companies in different regions use data science tools to achieve their goals.
  • Business Etiquette: Understanding international business norms, such as punctuality, communication styles, and greetings.

The skills gained during a data science international internship are highly transferable. Interns can apply their new knowledge to future roles and bring fresh perspectives back to their home countries, enriching the global understanding of data science.

Data science internships provide hands-on industry experience

Work-based learning programs give young professionals a chance to dive deep into their field, learning about global trends, new technologies, and emerging practices. Along with gaining cultural and country-specific knowledge, data science interns get real-world experience using the tools and methods professionals rely on to analyze and understand data. This hands-on training is key to developing the technical skills you’ll need to land a full-time job in data science.

Here is a bubble map showing some of the key skills interns gain during an international data science internship. While they gain the programming and data knowledge typical of any data science internship, they also gain knowledge in global trends and contexts and develop their cross-cultural competence.

Interns gain access to valuable feedback opportunities

Interns aim to build their skills in data science, whether it’s programming languages or database management. As part of a Global Internships Exchange, host companies create a training plan and complete program evaluations for each intern. This gives participants clear objectives and expectations, while offering valuable feedback from experienced data science professionals.

Between cross-cultural experiences, gaining hands-on industry knowledge, and connecting with top companies, a U.S. data science internship sets a strong foundation for a successful career. Two of our Global Internships alumni, José María Denia and Diego Gutiérrez, share how their internships led to career success:

“We wouldn’t have been able to start Nubika without Intrax. When we returned to Spain, we leveraged our internship experience to secure our first clients. A few years later, that experience gave us the confidence and knowledge to launch Nubika, a consulting company specializing in cloud solutions like Salesforce, Amazon AWS, Mulesoft, and Web & Mobile Development.”

How do Companies Benefit from Hosting Data Science Internships Through Global Internships?

You've heard how data science internships benefit young professionals, but if you're a U.S. company offering data science opportunities, you'll be glad to know that the process is mutually rewarding. So, why should your company host international interns? Let’s break it down:

International employees can expand business opportunities

The data is clear: international employees bring important expertise, such as cross-cultural skills, which are crucial for building relationships with global clients. A recent survey found that 40% of U.S. companies missed out on international opportunities due to a lack of employees with these skills. Considering that 95% of consumers live outside the U.S., having staff who can bridge cultural gaps is vital for business success in North America.

Fresh perspectives drive company growth and foster innovation

International interns bring diverse experiences and skills to U.S. companies, contributing to projects that directly support data-driven growth and globalization. These tasks may include analyzing large datasets, building machine learning models, optimizing algorithms, and researching emerging trends in data science.

Plus, international interns often bring unique insights into global markets, cross-cultural communication, and problem-solving approaches, which can enhance a company’s ability to adapt to diverse business environments.

Global Internships manages the entire process, allowing your company to benefit from the fresh perspectives and technical expertise that international interns provide.

What is Intrax Global Internships' Role Throughout the Data Science Internship Process?

What can you expect when using Global Internships to secure an international data science internship? Here are the key steps involved:

  • Eligibility Requirements: We start by reviewing your qualifications to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria for the program.
  • Consultations: You’ll receive personalized consultations to understand your goals, skills, and interests in data science.
  • Internship Matching: Based on your profile, we match you with a U.S. company that aligns with your career objectives.
  • Straight-Forward Cost Estimations: We provide clear and transparent cost estimates, so you know what to expect financially.
  • DS-2019 Form: This critical document is issued to initiate your J-1 Visa application.
  • J-1 Visa Sponsorship: As an official sponsor, we handle the legal aspects of securing your J-1 Visa.
  • Continued Support: Throughout your internship, Intrax Global Internship offers ongoing support to ensure a smooth and successful experience.

This process ensures that both interns and host companies are fully prepared and supported during the entire internship.

Eligibility Requirements

Here at Intrax Global Internships, we ensure the success of our programs by setting specific eligibility requirements for host companies. These include having either $3 million in annual revenue or more than 25 employees. If your company doesn’t meet these criteria, you may still qualify after an in-person visit. Companies must provide suitable office space for the intern, an onsite supervisor, an Employer Identification Number (EIN) for tax purposes, and worker’s compensation or proof of exemption.

To provide structure during the internship, we require companies to help complete a Training Plan that outlines the intern's goals and objectives. Offering feedback is essential, with at least one performance evaluation required at the end of the internship. For more details on our requirements, read our guide to hiring international interns.

Consultations

We offer free consultations to discuss your expectations, interests, and career goals in data science. During the consultation, we’ll outline available program opportunities, payment options, your unique skills, and visa requirements. Companies interested in hosting an intern can also request a consultation for more information.

To get started, you can request information on our website or intern applicants can sign up through our streamlined student portal.

Internship Matching

Securing an internship, especially abroad, can feel overwhelming. That’s where we come in. Our team helps students and young professionals find internships that align with their goals, skills, and cultural knowledge. We match your skill set with companies that need those strengths.

To explore available internships, you can search on our website using filters for location, category, compensation, and function. For the latest program details, you can also reach out to your local Intrax office.

Transparent Cost Breakdown

Get a clear picture of how much everything will cost. Use the J-1 Visa Pricing Calculator to estimate the costs of your adventure.  First, you will choose your country of residence and your internship duration. Then, we will provide you with an approximation of costs. The full cost of the program includes different elements, such as:

  • Application fee
  • Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee to the U.S. government
  • DS-2019 administrative costs
  • DS-2019 home shipping
  • Travel health insurance
  • Pre-departure advisory services
  • Emergency support services (24/7 availability)
  • Monthly check-ins

We simplify the complex process of applying for an international data science internship, breaking it down into manageable steps. Keep in mind that the cost estimate doesn’t include visa interviews, airfare, housing, or personal expenses. Compensation for internships and traineeships in the U.S. can vary, and our team will provide clear guidance on these details during your consultation.

DS-2019

The DS-2019 is the key document that allows you to apply for a J-1 Visa. At Intrax Global Internships, we issue the DS-2019 once we’ve matched you with a host company and verified that both parties meet the J-1 program requirements. This document contains essential information about you, the host company, and program details like industry, dates, and financial support. You’ll need to present the DS-2019 at your visa appointment at a U.S. Embassy.

J-1 Visa Sponsorship

The J-1 Visa, part of the Exchange Visitor Program, is a non-immigrant visa created by the U.S. government to allow students and young professionals to engage in educational and cultural programs in the U.S. To obtain a J-1 Visa, you need a sponsor, and Intrax Global Internships serves as one. A notable benefit of the J-1 Visa is the option for dependents—spouses and unmarried children under 21—to join you in the U.S. on a J-2 Visa, offering greater flexibility for participants with families.

Continued Support

After an intern is placed, our support continues for both interns and host companies. Interns will have regular check-ins with our staff to monitor progress toward their Training Plan goals and access to 24/7 emergency support. We also assist with HR-related aspects like tracking compensation and benefits. Host companies receive guidance on developing and maintaining Training Plans. Throughout the entire internship, both interns and companies can rely on ongoing collaboration with Intrax Global Internships.
