What is a J-1 Visa?

A J-1 Visa is a non-immigrant exchange visitor visa issued by the United States to individuals approved to participate in work-and-study-based exchange visitor programs. The purpose of the J-1 Visa is to foster global understanding through educational and cultural exchanges. This visa is designed to bring students, researchers, professors, and professionals to the U.S. for a temporary period to engage in specialized programs that promote cross-cultural learning.

One of the key aspects of the J-1 Visa program is the emphasis on participants returning to their home countries after completing their programs to share their experiences and contribute to their communities. A related  requirement, known as the "two-year home-country physical presence requirement," mandates that certain J-1 Visa holders must reside in their home country for at least two years before becoming eligible to apply for other U.S. visas or permanent residency.

Types of J-1 Visa Programs

The J-1 Visa program offers a diverse range of opportunities for people from around the world to engage in educational and cultural exchanges. Each program category is tailored to meet specific needs and objectives, ensuring that participants gain valuable experiences while contributing to mutual understanding between the U.S. and their home countries.

Exchange Visitor Program Categories

The Exchange Visitor Program is divided into several categories, each designed for distinct groups of participants and their goals. Here are the main J-1 Visa jobs and categories:

  • Au Pair: This program allows young people to live with an American host family for up to two years while providing childcare services. Au pairs participate in family life, attend educational courses, and experience American culture firsthand.
  • Camp Counselor: This category is for anyone who wants to work as a counselor at summer camps in America. Participants engage in cultural exchange activities and contribute to the camp's program.
  • Intern: College students or recent graduates can participate in structured and guided work-based learning programs in their fields of study. Internships can last up to 12 months and provide practical experience in a professional setting. You can find more internship program information here.
  • Trainee: Similar to the intern category, the J-1 trainee visa program is for individuals with a degree or professional certificate from a foreign post-secondary academic institution and at least one year of work experience, or those with five years of work experience in their field.
  • Teacher: Qualified educators can teach in accredited primary and secondary schools in the U.S. for up to three years. This program aims to promote educational and cultural exchange while enriching the host school's curriculum with international perspectives.
  • Professor and Research Scholar: Academics and researchers can engage in research, teaching, and lecturing at U.S. institutions. This category promotes collaborative research and educational activities that benefit both the participants and the host institutions.
  • Short-Term Scholar: Professors, research scholars, and other individuals with similar qualifications can participate in short-term research, teaching, or lecturing activities for up to six months.

There are a range of other J-1 visa categories, including:

  • Specialist
  • Secondary school student
  • College and university student
  • Government visitor
  • International visitor
  • Physician

Here at Intrax Global Internships, we specialize in securing J-1 visas for individuals joining internship programs in the United States, though we work with research scholars as well. Eligibility Criteria for a J-1 Visa for the USA

Obtaining a J-1 Visa for the USA requires meeting various eligibility criteria to ensure that applicants are suitable candidates for the exchange visitor program. Let’s take a look at some of the general and program-specific eligibility criteria, as well as the criteria we have for applicants here at Intrax Global Internships.

General Requirements for J-1 Visa Eligibility

The general requirements for obtaining a J-1 Visa apply to all applicants, regardless of the specific program category they are interested in. These requirements include:

  1. Non-immigrant intent: Applicants must demonstrate their intent to return to their home country after the completion of their program. This is typically shown through strong ties to your home country, such as family, property, or a job.
  2. Sponsorship: Participants must be sponsored by an organization that is designated by the U.S. Department of State to administer J-1 exchange visitor programs. The J-1 program sponsor will provide the necessary DS-2019 form, which is essential for your visa application.
  3. English proficiency: Applicants must possess sufficient proficiency in English to participate successfully in their exchange program, demonstrated through standardized tests, interviews, or certificates.
  4. Medical insurance: Participants must have health insurance that meets the minimum requirements set by the U.S. Department of State. This ensures that they are covered for any medical expenses incurred during their stay in the U.S.

There are also age requirements for the J-1 Visa, but these vary depending on the type of program you’re entering. For internships, applicants must be at least 18 years old, but may be able to apply if they turn 18 before their departure. The upper age limit is 35 years of age.

Specific Program Requirements

Each J-1 Visa category has specific eligibility criteria tailored to that exchange program, so it’s important to check your program carefully and make sure you meet the requirements. Here are some examples of the specific eligibility criteria for various categories:

  1. Intern: Applicants must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary academic institution outside the U.S. or have graduated within the past 12 months. The international internship must be related to their field of study.
  2. Au Pair: Applicants must be between 18 and 26 years old, have a secondary school education or equivalent, and have previous childcare experience. They must also be proficient in spoken English and pass a background check.
  3. Trainee: Applicants must have a degree or professional certificate from a foreign post-secondary academic institution and at least one year of work experience outside the U.S., or have five years of work experience in their field.
  4. Teacher: Applicants must have a degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree in education or the subject they intend to teach, a minimum of two years of teaching experience, and meet the qualifications for teaching in primary or secondary schools in their home country.
  5. Research Scholar: Applicants must have sufficient academic credentials and experience in their field to participate in research, teaching, or lecturing activities at a U.S. institution.

How do I Apply for a J-1 Visa for the USA?

So, you meet the eligibility criteria and you’re excited to start your journey. Now what? You’ll need to apply for a J-1 USA visa, which starts with securing an internship position—you can’t apply for your visa until you have a host organization to work for in the United States. Here are the J-1 Visa application steps:

  1. Secure an internship or other opportunity in the United States
  2. Find a J-1 Visa sponsor (like Intrax Global Internships!)
  3. Gather the required J-1 Visa documents
  4. Submit the DS-2019
  5. Attend the J-1 Visa Interview

Let’s take a detailed look at each of the application steps, and how the process works with our team acting as your J-1 Visa sponsor.

Secure an Internship or Other Opportunity in the United States

The first step in applying for a J-1 Visa is to identify and secure an opportunity that aligns with your goals and meets the program's requirements. This could be a U.S. internship for international students, traineeship, research position, teaching opportunity, or another type of exchange program. Once you receive an offer, ensure that the host organization is willing to support your J-1 Visa application. They will need to provide documentation to your J-1 Visa sponsor.

Secure a J-1 Visa Sponsor

Most host organizations don’t act as J-1 Visa sponsors—this is usually outsourced to a third party who are experts in U.S. immigration and can dedicate the necessary time and resources to securing your visa. At Intrax Global Internships, we are a U.S. Department-approved J-1 Visa sponsor, and can facilitate your visa application and support you during your time abroad.

Our team will work with you to issue your DS-2019 (more on that next) as well as secure any J-2 visas you need for your spouse and/or children. We’re dedicated to fast, easy, affordable, approachable service, and have more than 20 years of experience as a J-1 Intern and Trainee Visa sponsor. Request more information here to start your journey with Intrax Global Internships!

Gather Required Documentation

To issue your DS-2019, we’ll first need a few important documents. Make sure you submit everything required, which includes:

  • Your internship placement plan (DS-7002) (we will work with your host organization to prepare the final internship placement plan)
  • Your English proficiency results (you can complete a free online assessment or submit previous results from TOEFL or other credible tests; or, a partner agency or the Intrax regional office will schedule an interview with you
  • Your diploma or proof of enrollment
  • A copy of your resume or CV
  • A copy of your passport’s biographical page
  • The start and end dates of your program
  • Your host organization’s contact information

Once you’ve submitted these documents, we can work to issue your DS-2019.

Submit the DS-2019

The DS-2019 form, also known as the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status, plays a crucial role in the J-1 Visa work permit application process. It is issued by your visa sponsor and serves as the primary document that allows you to apply for a J-1 Visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.

The DS-2019 form certifies that you are eligible for participation in a specific exchange visitor program. It confirms that you have been accepted by a U.S. Department of State-designated sponsor organization and meet the criteria for the J-1 Visa category under which you are applying.

Our team can typically issue your DS-2019 within 14 days of receiving all completed application documents, conducting a phone interview with you and the host organization, and receiving your payment. Get started here!

Attend Your J-1 Visa Interview

The final step in the application process is attending your J-1 visa interview, where a consular officer will assess your application and determine your eligibility for the J-1 Visa. You’ll need to gather all required documents, including your:

  • DS-2019 form
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • Passport
  • SEVIS fee receipt
  • Visa application fee receipt
  • Photograph
  • Proof of funding
  • Any other supporting documents

Arrive at the embassy or consulate early for your scheduled interview. Be prepared to answer J-1 Visa interview questions about your exchange program, your background, and your intentions to return to your home country after the program.

If your visa is approved, the consular officer will provide instructions on how and when you will receive your passport with the J-1 Visa stamp. J-1 Visa processing times can vary, depending on the city you’re interviewing in. You can find more information about current wait times for both interviews and visa processing on the U.S. Department of State website.

Other J-1 Visa USA Tips and Info

Applying for and participating in a J-1 Visa program involves more than just meeting eligibility criteria and completing paperwork! To make the most of your exchange experience, it's important to understand various aspects of the program, from the duration of your stay to your rights and responsibilities as a participant. Here’s what you need to know.

Duration and Extension of Stay of J-1 Visa USA

The J-1 Visa duration depends on the specific category of your exchange program. Each category has its own maximum duration, for example:

  • Intern: Up to 12 months
  • Au Pair: Up to 12 months, with the possibility of extending
  • Trainee: Up to 18 months
  • Teacher: Up to 3 years, with the possibility of extending
  • Research Scholar and Professor: Up to 5 years
  • Short-Term Scholar: Up to 6 months

If you wish to extend your stay beyond the initial period allowed by your J-1 Visa, you must obtain approval from your J-1 Visa sponsor. Contact us well in advance of your program end date to request an extension, and we’ll be able to take things from there.

Health Insurance Requirements

J-1 Visa participants are required to have J-1 Visa health insurance that meets the minimum standards set by the U.S. Department of State for the entire duration of their program. If you work with us as your J-1 Visa sponsor, you will most likely receive coverage from our partner, Envisage Global Insurance. This is an affordable, comprehensive option that meets the requirements set out by the U.S. Department of State.

Spouses and Dependents

If you wish to bring your spouse or dependents with you to the United States, they can apply for J-2 Visas, which are specifically for dependents of J-1 Visa holders. At Intrax Global Internships, we can help secure J-2 Visas for your eligible family members. Each dependent must have their own DS-2019 form issued by your sponsor. They will need to apply for their visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate.
