This weekend my friends and I went to Majorca. It was quite the experience! We wanted to be somewhere interesting for the Fourth of July since we knew we would be missing home a little bit while looking at our friends’ social media posts of barbeques and fireworks. We arrived at Majorca at approximately 9am on Friday July 4th. We were tired yet anxious for the beginning of our trip.

When we arrived at the airport, we noticed it was a really nice airport compared to Schoenefeld in Berlin. It had automatic glass doors and nice tiled floors. It seemed like paradise already! When we exited the airport, we could already smell the sand, feel the breezy beach air and see the palm trees in the distance.

We decided to get a rental car because we assumed that since Majorca is a big island and had heard that there was not a lot of public transportation, we would need a more effective way to get around, especially if we were bringing beach gear with us. We ended up doing an Airbnb apartment for four people just like we did for Budapest. We got lost a couple of times going to the apartment but couldn’t be upset because the view was certainly nothing to complain about. We finally found the apartment, and “checked in”.

After a short nap, we went out to cruise the island of Majorca and check out some of the beaches. We passed by a cathedral of sorts that looked like a sandcastle! Apparently, it is one of the more famous landmarks on the island.

We had heard that the nicer and less commercial beaches were near the north coast of the island. We ventured off with a map to find them. Since all the signs were in Spanish and none of us were completely versed in Spanish and found the roundabouts that the island roads have confusing, we did get lost a little bit, but eventually, as always, we arrived at our destination. It was an island near the Port of Alcuida and Alcanada.

We chose to stay on the beach for about 2 hours and soak up some sun. The view was absolutely beautiful. Every beach was great to see and hang out at because when you looked out you could always see sides of the peninsulas that the island had. The Mediterranean was extremely salty but it was some of the clearest water that I’ve ever seen.

The next day we woke up at 8:00am to get to the west coast by 9:00am. We planned to rent a boat for the morning and afternoon in order to see Majorca from a different angle. This was probably the best and worst idea… It was great because the view was beautiful and the weather was fantastic but our game plan was to be on a boat from 9:00am to 5:30pm. Eight to nine hours of sun is dangerous! Some sunburns-- but we got through relatively unscathed.

The boat ride was probably the highlight of our trip since it was fantastic to go and relax on the water and be able to anchor down and swim wherever we wanted. We ended up anchoring in a couple of different places and stepping off the boat to check out the different ports. It was really interesting and I’ve never had this type of experience before—it was great that it was in a place like Majorca.
